There is a wealth of historical interest in the
area - both English and French.
Anjou was the centre of power of the Plantagenets
and Richard the Lionheart, Henry II and his wife Elinor of Aquitaine
are entombed at Fontevraud Abbey. Joan of Arc and Rabelais are associated
with Chinon and Cardinal Richelieu with the lovely town, just south
of Saumur, that bears his name.
There are beautiful chateaux to visit, good restaurants
and splendid wine - you can visit the caves, taste the wines, buy
at good prices and are always made welcome.
Saumur is the home of the national riding school
and there are demonstrations throughout the summer. There is an
excellent golf course nearby and the area offers tennis courts,
riding, swimming and water sports, boat trips, bicycle hire, an
excellent zoo, a small theme park, museums, markets, festivals and
even troglodyte villages. Or you can just relax and enjoy 'La Douceur
Angevine'.
Saint Georges du Bois
We are on the edge of a small village which has 350 inhabitants.
Saint Georges du Bois is a short walk from Les Blanches. Here you
will find a beautiful church, a courtyard where locals play 'petanque'
at weekends and national holidays, a bar/restaurant/store where
the patron will welcome you and serve drinks and reasonably priced
meals (which we can book for you). Circular walks are popular with
the locals and visitors too, a tennis court and village green are
located near the 'Salle des Fetes', which houses the village's 'Boule
de fort'. The village is quiet and the people who live here are
very welcoming and friendly.
In the next village, Fontaine Guerin, there is
a recreational lake. Surrounded by grass and trees, it has a small
sandy beach, a restaurant and a play area for small children. There
is a resident lifeguard during July and August. You can even fish!
